The company “Russian Gemstones” traces its history back to 1912 when Emperor Nicholas II founded the “Society for the Development and Improvement of the Artisanal Lapidary and Grinding Craft ‘Russian Gemstones'” in St. Petersburg. After the revolution (in 1922), the enterprise was transformed into the state trust “Russian Gemstones” by the Decree of the Council of People’s Commissars. Later (in 1971), it was reorganized into the Leningrad Production Association “Russian Gemstones,” and during the Perestroika period (in 1992), it became the Joint Stock Company “Russian Gemstones.”
Nina Ernstovna Vogt played a significant role in reviving national creativity and Russian culture traditions. In the 1950s, as the chief artist of the enterprise, she initiated the revival of silver enamelware production in Leningrad. Before the revolution, N.E. Vogt graduated from Baron Stieglitz’s Technical Drawing School, where folk crafts were a focus. During her studies, enamel on filigree was part of the artistic metalwork curriculum. Vogt mastered this technology and brought it to the jewelry factory.
Together with the creative team and skilled craftsmen, she revived the long-forgotten ancient technique of enamel on filigree in jewelry production (1954)—a technique particularly popular in Russian jewelry at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. The jewelers not only revived this unique technology but also created a new direction in the production of silver enamel filigree products, featuring original ornaments in Russian folk style.
Today, the Imperial Jewelry House “Russian Gemstones” produces a wide range of silver enamel filigree products, which have become the company’s hallmark. Filigree item crafting, soldering, and enamel painting are done exclusively by hand. The decorative patterns are based on traditional Russian folk motifs, stylized floral and animal designs, and creatively interpreted images from Russian folk and author tales, which are of high artistic value. Beyond jewelry, another direction is creating various stone figures. In developing the new range, the artists draw inspiration from St. Petersburg’s gem-cutting school’s heritage.
Specialists at the Imperial Jewelry House have created their own products based on old masters’ works, considering modern fashion demands while preserving true Russian gem-cutting traditions. Today, gemstone carvings are popular among buyers and collectors, confirming the high status and professionalism of the gem-cutters at “Russian Gemstones.”
Currently, the Imperial Jewelry House “Russian Gemstones” is the oldest enterprise in St. Petersburg in its industry.
